A short drive from the loud and bustling streets of Dubrovnik will bring you to the idyllic Konavle Valley, long considered to be the breadbasket of Dubrovnik. Although much of Konavle was burned to the ground during the 1991 Homeland War, the residents have been diligent in rebuilding their lives and legacies. Few traces of the destruction remain visible today. Konavle is once again thriving, and continues to play an important role in supplying the region with produce and meats. Using traditions that have been passed down through the centuries, the region is also making a name for itself as an up and coming producer of fine wines.
Our biking and wine tasting trip departs from the town of Gruda. All tours begin with a mandatory safety briefing and a review of the itinerary. We will be outfitted with top of the line Gary Fisher bikes, helmets, and bottled water.
Since the time of antiquity, the valley has been lined with Roman aqueducts, Illyrian hill forts, and Roman and Byzantine fortifications. As we wind our way through a maze of country roads, our guide will introduce us to the unique history of the area with stops at a 600-year-old monastery and 400-year-old watermills. We will also pay a visit to a casualty of the Homeland War that stands as a constant reminder of the resilience of the people of Konavle.
The journey will soon take us off-road for a leisurely ride through picturesque vineyards, beautiful orchards, and groves, near and along the river Ljuta.
In addition to shorter breaks, we will make two long stops during the trip. The first will be a snack break, where we will recharge our energy levels under one of the largest trees in Europe. The second is a stop at a fresh mountain stream for a cool dip in its crystal clear waters (optional).
The highlight of the trip is our final stop a world-renowned winery, where we’ll get a tour of the winery and have the opportunity to sample some of their award-winning offer.
Our tours were designed so they can be completed by people of all ages and fitness levels.
